2015 National Lottery Award Presentation

Today started like any other day really.

Three young ospreys screaming for food, lots of volunteers around to help our visitors get the most from their visit, and a BBC film crew.

By around 10:30 the film crew seemed to be growing - there were loads of them! They didn't have Welsh accents either - the first red flag of the day.

Next thing, wildlife presenter Michaela Strachan is spotted on the top floor of the 360 Observatory. Well that's strange - why didn't anyone tell us she was coming?

Half an hour later, Michaela and a cameraman are inside the 360 Observatory doing some filming. Hmmmm.....

We are then told to group-up in the Observatory for a quick Q&A feature with Michaela.

"I'm not really here to ask questions" she proclaims as she grapples with something heavy inside a suspicious-looking green bag.

"I'm here to present Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust with a very special award. Out of numerous projects nominated in the Environment category, it gives me great pleasure to declare the '360 Observatory Project' the overall winner of the 2015 National Lottery Awards".

It was at this point when the whole of the Observatory erupted and went crazy! Nobody had a clue this was going to happen.

So what does this mean to us?

Well, firstly we win a £2,000 cash prize. We will use all of this money to install electricity in the 360 Observatory and build a wheelchair lift so that absolutely everybody will be able to get to the top level. Work will start once the osprey season has finished.

It also means that we get some new bling to decorate the Observatory!

MWT - The National Lottery Award

Over 10,000 people voted for the 360 Observatory during the National Lottery voting in June and July. We knew when we were building it, it would be an amazing place to learn about and engage with wildlife; today we learned that thousands of others agree with us. Thank you all so much for taking time and voting for us - you can see for yourself what your vote has meant to us.

But you know, what this really means for us deep down is that the work of so many volunteers has been rewarded with one of the most prestigious awards we could win in the UK. People travelling long distances and giving up their time and skills for free, day in day out, year after year.

Many years of hard work right across from the Trustees down to the guys on the ground - carrying tonnes of materials across an inhospitable and unforgiving wetland peat-bog. Your passion and enthusiasm for engaging our visitors with the amazing wildlife of the Dyfi is immeasurable - and, at the risk of repeating myself again, we simply could not do this without you.

It felt wrong having just one pair of hands receiving the trophy today. In truth, over a hundred volunteers had a finger on it. Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust just built a building with Lottery money - it is an amazing family of volunteers that makes the building special.

Thank you.
