Glesni Returns - 2015

Glesni Returns - 2015

Glesni is Back! (Play It Cool, Trig)

Four days into the week and we've had our fourth osprey arrival.

At 07:26 this morning, 9th April, Glesni returned to the Dyfi for her third year of breeding with Monty - she will be five years old this year and, officially now, Monty's longest relationship to date!

Blue 24 was still on the nest at daybreak but interestingly, Monty had not fed her since she arrived two days (to the minute almost) previously on Tuesday morning.

Both females took to the skies for around 90 minutes whilst Monty started nest building with gusto - he knew the score. This year, Blue 24's bond to the nest was much weaker than in 2014 and the lengendary battles of last year were not necessary. By 09:00 Monty was sharing the nest with a female again, only this time it was Glesni. Blue 24's cousin had arrived one day earlier than in 2014, so had Monty.

Here is a quick video of what took place early this morning:

Here are the arrival times of the four ospreys this week:

  • Dai Dot - Monday 6th April at 07:49
  • Blue 24 - Tuesday 7th April at 07:29
  • Monty - Wednesday 8th April at 14:19
  • Glesni - Thursday 9th April at 07:26

Dai Dot is now back at his mid-Wales nest with his unringed partner, so where does this leave Blue 24?

Seven of the eight ospreys that bred in Wales in 2014 are back home, the Glaslyn male has yet to arrive. His prospects are looking increasingly slim, but it's too early to write him off yet (a Rutland female returned yesterday, 18 days later than she arrived last year - keep looking up guys).

So, Blue 24 has a full house of ospreys again in 2015 - will she look for a single male close by (there are over 20 nest platform in Wales), or will she venture back to Rutland, her ancestral home where she visited briefly in 2014? Problem is, all the established ospreys have returned to Rutland.

One has to feel sorry for poor Blue 24. Her strategy of loafing around the four nests in Wales didn't pay off in 2014 and the cards don't seem to have fallen for her in 2015 either so far. However, she is not five years old yet - I have a feeling we will be hearing much more about her in the coming weeks and months.

For now though, Monty and Glesni are together again after a 7½ month sabbatical, the 2015 season starts right here..

Oh, if you missed Monty's 'Trigger' moment on Tuesday night as he was scooping out an egg cup - here it is..
