Ringing 2023

Ringing 2023

2023 rings

Both our 2023 chicks have been ringed.

We have one girl and one boy. Here are the stats:

  • Chick 1: 1910g – female – ringed at 34 days old
  • Chick 2: 1515g – male – ringed at 32.2 days old

We've named our birds in the usual manner, after Welsh rivers and lakes. Our oldest is named Cennen and her little brother is called Seiont.

If you're not Welsh and need some help with pronunciation, here's a quick video that may help:

As usual, no animals were harmed during the ringing process, although we did lose Alwyn for a bit to the creek.

Cennen is a record breaker, she is the heaviest chick (out of 31) we've ringed at this nest since 2011. She was an astonishing 26% heavier than Seiont despite only hatching a day and a half earlier.

The perfect Goldilocks weather she experienced while growing up helped as did the fact Egg 1 didn't hatch. More food to go around.

Both Cennen and Seiont will fledge in a couple of weeks time when they are 7-8 weeks old.

Here is this year's ringing video, music by Welsh soprano Charlotte Church singing Sancta Maria (it's from the opera Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni). With massive thanks to Tony Cross again for ringing our birds, including his daughter, Hannah. Brilliant job.
