Dai Dot Returns

Dai Dot Arrives 6th of April

It has been a most satisfactory day in osprey-world with many late birds returning having been delayed due to weather on their migration route.

At 07:49 this morning, 6th April, we welcomed our first osprey of the season at the Dyfi nest. It wasn't Monty, however, neither was it the Missus, Glesni. It was our old friend, Dai Dot.

Dai has been a regular on the Dyfi since at least 2011, but last year he bred for the first time at a nest in mid-Wales and sired two chicks with an unringed female. He arrived on 2nd April in 2014, this year he returned four days later on 6th April. You can read more about Dai Dot and all the other main ospreys that have contributed to the Welsh population in this new book; Ospreys In Wales: The First Ten Years. All profits go to DOP and the Glaslyn osprey project.

Dai does not have a leg ring, so how do we know it's him?

Like all ospreys, Dai Dot has some distinguishing features that make identification a bit easier.

Didn't bat a nictitating membrane when the 08:05 to Birmingham International passed this morning. He doesn't do train announcements either

Dai Dot stayed around the nest until 11:10 and then flew off only to return a couple of hours later. He even started scraping out an egg cup a few times..

The best news of all is that Dai is now back at his breeding nest as of this evening and his partner of 2014 has just returned. They were sharing a trout on the nest rim at just after 5pm. Hopefully the pair can now be left in peace and they can successfully raise more chicks as they did last year.

The Monty & Glesni show will hopefully start later this week, but for now, here is some superb footage of Dai Dot landing on the Dyfi nest this morning. Hopefully, he'll stop by to say farewell at the end of the season, just like he did in 2014.
