The Big Pull - Part II

The Big Pull - Part II

March 1st - All the Details

We are still going ahead this Thursday on St. David's Day, March 1st. Please see Part I for some general details.

Look at the map below to see the route we will take. To recap, we need around 60 people to pull a fiber-optic cable off a drum near the visitor centre "A" to the osprey nest.

The Big Pull - map. Dyfi Osprey Project.

A - Denotes the start where the cable will be on a free-turning drum on jacks.

B - Denotes the end of the boardwalk, 300m from A. Pulling to B should be the easy bit.

C - Denotes where we will pull the cable to. Network Rail will pull it the last few metres under their track and to the osprey nest. From B to C is around 400m and the more difficult part going through wet bog and swamp.

The first 300m should be relatively easy on this boardwalk

When you arrive, we will:

  • Guide you to a parking place if you are arriving by car
  • Ask you to sign in on a register so we know how many people we've got
  • Present a 10-minute talk about The Big Pull including your role and general Health & Safety
  • Split you into teams. The stronger and fitter you are, the nearer to C you will be allocated. Remember, everyone is as important as each other - we'll do this by teamwork, not a strength competition.
  • Provide you with gloves
  • Take a group picture of everybody!
  • Provide you with hot tea/coffee and biscuits

This is what you need to remember:

  • Please arrive early, ideally between 9.30am and 9.45am
  • If you think you can do the B to C (wet bog), bring Wellingtons or Waders
  • If you think you would be happier on a firm boardwalk, bring strong boots/shoes
  • Bring your own MUG. We won't have enough for 60 people on site.

This is very important: Up to now many people have said they would like to be part of the Big Pull.

Please let us know if you are coming. It is obviously important we know roughly how many people are planning to come along.

That's it! Keep looking here for any last minute updates, and see you on Thursday.

*** Update, Feb 29th. We're nearly there, thank you to all of you that have confirmed you're coming so far, around 70 in all. See you tomorrow.. ***
