We had a bit of a scare over night

In the dead of night, pitch black, Menai somehow managed to fall off the nest.

The video is below, but here is the sequence of events in time order:

  • Menai tries to jump to the nest perch but falls off the nest
  • Incredibly, she doesn't fall to the ground but keeps airborne
  • After circling around in the darkness Menai finally lands on top of the larch perch
  • She stays here for over five hours until 04:05
  • Then flies back to the nest
  • Monty brings in breakfast at 04:25 and Menai grabs the fish

Just for a moment there we had that sickening feeling we had last year with Ceri. Luckily, this time Menai managed not to hit the deck - by how much we'll never know. It doesn't matter.

Can ospreys see in the dark? You bet they can!

(A small number of people are unable to see the Live Streaming at the moment. Please bear with us, we are working on it as quickly as we can)

Menai lands back on the nest successfully

By the way - if you missed our short osprey 'movie' this week, here it is. We're thinking of making a movie of the whole 2018 season and making a DVD next year, will let you know..

Thanks for the update Emyr. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for Menai, she certainly seemed to handle it well.

Thank you so much Ems and team for this blog posted so quickly! I don't know how you found the time today after being up most of the night.  I missed Menai falling but heard the noise and was fascinated watching the camera work where you were looking on the ground for her below the nest, etc. So happy and relieved to witness Menai flying back to the nest as soon as daylight came. Hope to visit for the first time very soon.

Thank you Emyr for the video and update with Menai's mishap. Oh Menai, please be careful! I'm so glad that she's okay. My heart sinks everytime I think about what happened to Ceri last year. Please stay safe.

Glad to know she is OK, and good to see Eitha coming on.  Thanks for all the work in keeping watch and putting this update together.

Oh my heart went BUMP. I'm known as a born worrier and I've already started worrying for the chicks when they fly off. Been watching them since they first appeared as an egg!

Thank you Ems for all your efforts both last night and all day today. A print of Ceri hangs on the wall in front of my computer and when I first started to read  Chat this morning my heart sank. Thankfully Menai got lucky.

Thank you so much for the blog. I was watching it all take place last night.  I was so worried about her.  Thank goodness she didn't fall to the ground.  So please she returned safely. I also saw Glesni fly to the nest perch after seeing an owl off.  Wonderful to see.

Thanks so much for the update and video and I'm so pleased Menai is none the worse for her nocturnal adventure but it must have been a worrying night for you all. She must already have strong legs/feet to enable her to roost on the anti-perch perch for five hours.

I turned on for a last bedtime look just as she thunked off the nest. I wished I hadn't! I never knew when I started this osprey watching last year that it would lead to sleepless nights... Thanks for always keeping us so well-informed.

Great blog as usual. Ospreys can see in the dark! wow. Funny to watch Eitha following Menai's flight in the night, and then both parents watching the landing on the larch. All is well that ends well, but the first few frames of Menai missing the perch are truly terrifying.

Thank you Ems, so pleased I was in bed then. Just pleased she is safe and sound. Did remind me of the Ceri incident. Thank goodness all is well.
