Nest Perch Breaks Off

Nest Perch Breaks Off

A 'lucky' Accident?

Last night the horizontal nest perch we erected in 2017 broke off.

Idris decided to join Telyn on the perch, but it snapped under the combined force of their weights and Idris' forward inertia.

We test the nest infrastructure every spring before the ospreys return. We were, in fact, going to replace this perch over the coming winter. We definitely will now!

Thankfully this happened around a week before our three (rather heavy) females are due to fledge – they were 46, 45 and 43 days old. Idris and Telyn are experienced fliers, so were able to recover, acrobatically, before flying back to the main Monty's Perch. Neither parents were injured.

Can you help?

It's a brutal environment out on the estuary; re-purposed branches have a limited shelf-life. Ideally we'd like to replace the nest perch with a composite one, made out of recycled materials, formed/moulded into a composite structure in the form of a heavy branch.

We've had a quick Google but come up with nada. We'll ask Millboard later today - they make our recycled boardwalk.

Do you know of anyone that could make one of these for us? Could we make one using 3-D printing?

Please do let us know if you have any ideas; many thanks.
